On the occasion of the election of Ms. Julia Gillard as Prime Minister of Australia, Syechelles President James Michel sent the following letter:
“Dear Prime Minister,
“It is with great pleasure that I take this opportunity to extend to you, on behalf of the Government and people of Seychelles, our warmest and most sincere felicitations on your assumption to the Office of Prime Minister.
“Albeit your race to victory was not without its challenges – as are all good races – your appointment to this high office bears testimony to the faith and confidence that the people of Australia have in you, to continue leading Australia with responsibility, industry and courage.
“Your confirmation to this post comes at a time when the relationship between our two countries continues to prosper and is moving to ever greater heights. Following the invitation of the Governor General, I am looking forward to my State visit to Australia, scheduled for the first half of 2011. It will provide an ideal opportunity for us to find new and innovative ways of expanding our dynamic partnership.
“I am certain that under your capable leadership, Australia will continue to strive and take the necessary actions to find solutions to safeguarding our environment and the future of our planet. We, as a small island state, attach a great deal of importance to environmental matters and, therefore, count on your country’s support on these issues.
“I look forward to working with you, in the spirit of our shared values, to reinforce and consolidate our relationship as well as to continually promote the ideals of peace and security in the African and Indian Ocean region, and on the world stage.
“I avail of this opportunity to wish you every success in the discharge of the tasks ahead. Please accept, Your Excellency, my best wishes for your continued personal good health and prosperity and that of your family, while renewing the assurances of my highest consideration.”
