Conference organizers and delegates visiting NewcastleGateshead over the summer will have the opportunity see one of the UK’s most iconic structures in action.

Gateshead Council has started a series of 100 daily tilts of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge to help showcase the engineering marvel to the public.

Everyday at approximately 12 noon, tourists, local people and passers-by will get the opportunity to see the famous Gateshead Millennium Bridge perform a tilt. The pilot scheme starts today (June 10) and will run for 100 consecutive days during the peak summer period, and if successful could be extended even further.

In addition to the 100 daily tilts throughout the summer, conference organizers can request a special bridge tilt as part of their social program or have the bridge lit up in their corporate colors. This service is available all year round.

Jessica Roberts, head of Business Tourism at NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau, said, “It’s fantastic that visitors to NewcastleGateshead will be guaranteed a daily opportunity to enjoy this spectacular sight throughout the summer months. We pride ourselves on the fact that we can provide organizers and delegates with creative and memorable events. The bridge tilt is an excellent example from a host of activities that we can arrange, and one which is sure to wow even the most demanding delegate.”

Councillor Linda Green, cabinet member for culture at Gateshead Council, added, “The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is one of the biggest attractions in the North of England, and we know that many people never get a chance to see it tilt. By introducing this regular tilt time – every day at noon – we think it gives everyone a chance to see it move. The Quayside is now such a vibrant and exciting place so we hope this will be something that everyone can enjoy – tourists and locals alike. We want this to become a real landmark event like the Edinburgh gun in Scotland.”
