RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Rio de Janeiro will host the 2013 and 2014 global Laureus World Sports Awards ceremonies. The Awards, also known as the “Oscar for Sports,” is held annually in different countries, and celebrates the most remarkable men and women from the world of sports along with their achievements from the previous year.

As the birthplace of sports and culture in Brazil, Rio is the ideal host city. Rio’s energy and natural beauty have become iconic representations of the country to the rest of the world. The beaches, the Sambadrome and Maracanã will provide a backdrop for the ceremony. The Awards will be held in the Municipal Theater, the stage for great Brazilian and international musicians and ballerinas. The Municipal Theater has recently hosted renowned international events for the United Nations Conference for Sustainable Development, for the Rio+20, and for the speech of U.S. President Barack Obama on his visit to Brazil.

For Paulo Senise, Executive Director of Rio Convention & Visitors Bureau, the hosting of the Global Laureus Awards “will have a very positive impact for Rio de Janeiro and grant the city even more international prominence and recognition.”

Governor Sérgio Cabral highlighted the importance of the event: “It crowns the calendar of great international events that we will have in the coming years. It highlights the great moment of accelerated development and great achievements that Rio and Brazil are experiencing. It is an event that brings glamour in honoring some of the great athletes of our century, and also contains a relevant social element. Rio will gain two more social programs in addition to what the Laureus Foundation already accomplishes in the Maré community – a social legacy that is without a doubt the greatest legacy of all of the sporting achievements.”

Proceeds from the Laureus World Sports Awards will directly benefit the work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, which supports more than 100 community sports projects around the world, that have helped improve the lives of over one-and-a-half million young people.

Each year, the Laureus World Sports Awards recognizes athletes in seven categories. To select the winners, a Selection Panel consisting of the world’s leading sports editors, writers and broadcasters vote to create a shortlist of six nominations in the first five categories: Laureus World Sportsman of the Year, Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year, Laureus World Team of the Year, Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year and Laureus World Comeback of the Year. The nominations for the two additional categories – the Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the Year and the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability – are nominated by Specialist Panels.
